UEFA wants to create a Super League to replace the Champion League
The European Football Federation (UEFA) and the European Club Association (ECA) plan to consider establishing a Super League from the 2027/2028 season.
The European Football Union (UEFA) issued a new format for the Champions League last year and will apply from the 2024-2025 season. The number of participating teams will increase from 32 to 36 teams. All 36 teams share one group, each team is drawn to play 8 matches against 8 different opponents (4 home matches and 4 away matches). The top eight teams will advance to the round of 16 while the 16 teams ranked from 9 to 24 will be paired in the play-off to determine the next team. Meanwhile, 12 teams ranked from 25 to 36 were eliminated from the tournament.
However, according to Marca, UEFA is considering the possibility of changing the European Cup format again. The issue will be discussed at the end of October this year. If put into operation, the planned Super League will not start before 2027. Specifically, the tournaments will be named Super League, Europa League and Aspiring League.
Each division will have 18 teams, matches will be played in the same format as the national championship, each team must play 34 matches. The team leading the 'Super League' will be the champion. Every year there will be 2 teams relegated from the Super League and 2 teams promoted from the Europa League, 4 teams relegated from the Europa League and 4 teams promoted from the Aspiring League. With this format, it is likely that each team will have to play 80 matches/season. However, this idea is considered to kill football when players may have to play more than 80 matches a season.
The original idea of Super League was from Florentino Perez - President of Real Madrid Club. Super League launched on April 18, 2021 with 12 founding teams. However, just a few days later, the tournament stopped its organization plan due to fierce opposition and criticism from UEFA and fans of the teams participating in the tournament.
