The historic ruling could change European football
A decision by the Belgian Pro League's board of directors could mark a historic turning point that alters European football.
The match between Anderlecht and Genk in the 19th round of the Belgian Pro League will be replayed due to a VAR error, as confirmed by Genk: "The Professional Football Disciplinary Council of Belgium has decided that the Anderlecht vs. Genk match at the end of 2023 will be replayed. The specific schedule will be announced soon." This decision has the potential to change the course of European football, as a match might be replayed due to a VAR-related mistake.
The ruling from the Professional Football Disciplinary Council of Belgium contradicts the referee committee's decision not to replay the match. Previously, on December 23, 2023, Genk suffered a 1-2 defeat against Anderlecht due to a goal scored by Anders Dreyer in the 90+1st minute. In this situation, the referee team and VAR made a serious error.
Earlier, in the 23rd minute, Bryan Heynan of Genk was fouled by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in the penalty area. Yira Sor, his teammate, successfully scored from the rebound. However, VAR intervened and disallowed the goal. Initially, the referee signaled a foul by a Genk player entering the penalty area at the time Heynan took the shot. However, slowed-down footage revealed that two Anderlecht players also engaged in similar behavior. According to the rules, Genk should have been awarded a penalty kick.
Genk, unwilling to accept the referee committee's decision, appealed and succeeded. They will have a rematch against their opponents in the near future.
Currently, Anderlecht is in 2nd place, trailing the league leaders Union St.-Gilloise by 8 points in the Belgian Pro League standings. Meanwhile, Genk is in 5th place, also 8 points behind Anderlecht.
