Buying Onana was a big mistake for MU
It was once considered a contract that would change the face of MU, but Andre Onana's performance up to now has been extremely disappointing.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper was brought in to replace David de Gea thanks to his excellent footwork. However, statistics show the harsh reality: Andre Onana was MU's wrong contract.
Last summer's transfer window, coach Ten Hag decided to get rid of De Gea because he thought he was lagging behind modern goalkeepers, especially his ability to pass the ball with his feet was quite bad.
Andre Onana is considered an upgraded version compared to the Spanish goalkeeper, with a not cheap fee of 47 million pounds. However, comparing Onana's time at MU with De Gea's last three seasons serving MU, there is a clear difference between the two goalkeepers when considering important indicators.
Andre Onana has conceded an average of 1.8 goals per match since starting for the Red Devils, while De Gea has only conceded an average of 1.23 goals/match. Onana also made mistakes that led to goals at Old Trafford, averaging one error every 10 matches, compared to De Gea's only one error every 20 matches. Most notably, the former Inter Milan goalkeeper blocked 64.7% of the shots he faced, compared to De Gea blocking 69.7% of shots from opposing strikers.
Ten Hag likes Andre Onana's ability to use his feet better if placed next to De Gea. However, statistics from the recent 2-3 loss to Galatasaray show the opposite.
Only 57% of the passes from Onana against the Turkish team found their way to teammates, while the other 16 passes went to the wrong address. In addition, the 47 million pound rookie also made a mistake that led to a penalty in the second half by passing directly to Dries Mertens, forcing Casemiro to commit a foul in the penalty area. As a result, MU had to pay a penalty, and the Brazilian midfielder "went to the shower early" with a second yellow card, meaning a red card.
